The
Eastern district of Kono erupted into violence on
Saturday October 27, as supporters of the SLPP and APC engaged in running
battles, hurling stones to and fro. According to the police public relations
specialist ASP Samura, the trouble started during the
SLPP rally in Kono. The SLPP had informed the
police of their rally and their route, but according to the police spokesman
they omitted to include one of the routes they eventually took, which led
them past a building that the APC were using as an office. Suddenly as the
marchers were passing the building trouble erupted. Missiles filled the sky
amid extensive street fighting. “It was uncontrollable” said the ASP. Looking
extremely uncomfortable he declined to say who started the fighting, saying
only that the incident was under investigation. Under intense questioning
from the press, he also admitted there were no arrests.
