The United States Police have
issued a statement saying they are
completely innocent in the recent case in which a Vietnamese-American
doctor was ejected from a United Airlines plane, in the process
receiving serious injuries. They say that in the process of being
assisted from his seat Dr Dao slipped and fell, sustaining a
broken nose and losing two of his front teeth. They say that Dr Dao
lost balance as he was reaching into his jacket, apparently for a
concealed weapon, although on later investigation this turned out to be
his phone. They say that these unfortunate incidents usually arise when
citizens become disruptive and fail to follow instructions from
uniformed officers. Besides, they say, this was an operation led
by Chicago Airport security police rather than the United States
Police, who
merely provided backup. In no way was this police brutality, the
statement continues. To attempt to draw parallels with previous cases
of US Police
confrontations with civilians, the statement
says, was grandstanding and intended to demean the gallant men and
women who are protecting civilized society, including the President,
Congressmen and Senators. It is malicious, the statement continues, to
conclude because this unfortunate incident occurred in bright light in
front of 200 witnesses that the US Police might readily and needlessly
use deadlier force against innocent black men on some dark, lonely city
street. The US Police engages with the citizens
countless times each and every day, and all self-respecting citizens
obey their orders. Only in a tiny fraction of
cases do individuals choose to defy police instructions, resulting in
needless confrontation.
In a related development, the Chicago District Attorney has announced
that following closed door grand jury hearings he does not believe
there is a need to pursue indictments against the officers involved.
The District Attorney said
there was insufficient
evidence to press charges. When told that there were about 200
witnesses to the event he assured reporters that their testimony had
been taken
into consideration. When told that a further 250 million had watched
the incident on the internet and come to a different conclusion, he
said their views do not count. The
accused were innocent until proven guilty in the US system, which was
the greatest system of jurisprudence worldwide. The grand jury had not
been convinced there was a strong case against the accused and that was
the end of
the matter.
